ACU Hosts 5 Minute Research Pitch Presentations

ACU was delighted to host the national finals of the Five Minute Research Pitch in Sydney on Monday.

Similar to the national Three Minute Thesis, 5RP is an exciting opportunity for researchers to showcase their work to a national audience and win up to $7,000 towards their research.   Competitors have just five minutes, and three Powerpoint slides, to present their current research in a way that is easily understood by a non-academic audience. Competitors from ACU, Victoria University, Edith Cowan University, Federation University, the University of Southern Queensland, Central Queensland University and Southern Cross University took part this year.

The overall winner was Dr Daniel Bucher, Southern Cross University, who presented his research The quest for the holy grail: direct age determination of crabs and lobsters. Dr Bucher also won the People’s Choice Award, as voted by members of the audience.

The other finalists were:

Group One – Science & Health

First Place: Dr Daniel Bucher, Southern Cross University, The quest for the holy grail: direct age determination of crabs and lobsters

Joint Second Place: Dr Favil Singh, Edith Cowan University, How can we beat the tumour with simple activity?

Joint Second Place: Dr Morgan Wallace, Federation University, Fighting Cancer With Your Immune System

Group Two – Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences

First Place: Dr Aastha Malhotra, University of Southern Queensland, Empowering Migrant and Refugee Women Entrepreneurs 2.0

Third Place: Dr Noah Riseman, ACU, Serving in Silence? Australian LGBTI Military Service since 1945

The next 5RP will be hosted at Southern Cross University in November 2016.
